We owned a Leonberger, Bronco, who passed away last summer at the age almost 13. That’s a long life for a Leonberger. They don’t live that long, 8 years on average. Bronco got a longevity award called the Grey Muzzle Award. However, those 13 years were the best years of my life. Our Leonberger Bronco was my best friend, so kind, so strong, so brave, so loving towards children and towards smaller dogs. He saved our Pug Daisy’s life from an attacking loose German Shepherd, and that’s just one of the 100+ Bronco stories I’ve written down. Leonbergers are truly amazing dogs and we are considering getting another one. What I didn’t know before reading this book was how incredibly interesting their history is, and how interesting research on giant breeds and especially Leonbergers is. I can say, without much doubt, that the Leonberger is the most interesting dog breed in the world.This massive 420+ pages large book presents Leonberger and giant dog breed history in great detail, and in a depth and clarity that no other Leonberger book I’ve ever come across does. This book crushed many of my beliefs about dogs and especially Leonbergers. That’s a good thing. When you know a little bit about a topic you may think you know it all, but in reality, you often know just a little, and the little you know is often wrong. I love to have my erroneous beliefs and assumptions crushed. It is refreshing and part of growing as a person. It changes you for the better.In addition to history, it presents the breed standard, how the breed standards have changed several times through our history, and a critique of how we breed purebred dogs. The how and why is very much part of human culture and history. The book is about the Leonberger dog, sports, shows, breeding, Leonberger organizations and their history, health, and genetics. The research effort that must have gone into this book is astounding. The book features hundreds of color photos, many of them incredibly beautiful. There are hundreds of years old drawings and newspaper clips, research paper excerpts, and full page color photos of Leonbergers in action. It is an expensive book, but it is truly a masterpiece that every Leonberger owner should consider purchasing.
