I really love scary ghost shows, scary movies, and read the Amittyville Horror and really enjoyed it. I was looking for some spooky books to read for the Halloween season, and this was one of the books I picked up. It was… fine. I can’t say that many things freaked me out that were relayed in the book, like some of the supposed events in the Amittyville Horror did. It was just 'ok' for me in terms of painting a scary story.One reason in particular why this book wasn’t quite what I was looking for was the sort of annoying undertones of the author; it sounds little but continuous little bits of his opinion scattered here and there had me constantly rolling my eyes. Things like the Smurls didn’t ‘deserve’ to be haunted because they were ‘good ol’ fashioned folk’ (hard workers and devoutly religious and all that, not like those ‘godless, lazy hippies’), that pagans or witches (of any sort) are hedonistic and satanic and bring with them evil (you know, anything that’s not devoutly Christian or something near to it), that turning to God is really the only way… Just sort of annoying subtext like that.Also, it would really annoy me how the book would contradict itself in places? The Warrens and the Smurls would at times say things to friends or the public like "All these stories and movies about hauntings and demons are so overly-dramatized, it's not actually like that, there aren't monsters or things flying around the room"... But then the book would relay how family members would see demon creatures running around their duplex and the bed would float in midair and the TV would fly off the stand?? OK guys.All in all nothing in this book really scared me – I think this book is maybe for more religious folk? Of course all these stories (regarding demons in particular) revolve around religion to some degree but… not so heavy-handedly? This book seems more preoccupied with convincing you that God and Jesus are good pals to have rather than trying to scare you. I on the other hand was looking to pee my pants out of fright, which I unfortunately did not.
